Second Grade News
I don’t think
there is anyone in Lakeport who doesn’t know the Second
Grade has been selling pretzels during Lent. What you
may not know is how much we have learned with this project.
As part of a Social Studies unit, we formed a business.
We learned about producers, consumers, goods, and services.
We found out about profits and losses. As part of our
math, we compared pretzel prices at our local stores.
Wal-Mart had the best price but was usually sold out.
Meijers had a “ten for ten and get eleventh one free” sale.
We cheered that week. We even priced baggies and found
some for less than a penny a bag. More cheering!
We formed an assembly line with quality and quantity
controls. With teamwork, rubber gloves and a scale, we
made it possible for each customer to get two ounces (not
one pretzel more) of our great product. We don’t have
a clue how Miss Hall got a bag of broken bits and salt.
We practiced marketing skills with flyers and great PA
commercials. After each sale, we counted our money and
figured out how many bags we would need for the next week.
Next Wednesday (4/1/09), we will have our “going out of
business sale”.
Our goal has
been to raise $200 for the Children’s Fund. Thanks to
our great customers and hard working Second graders, we are
about $35 short of our goal.
