First Grade News
First grade is
excited that it’s officially spring! There are lots of good
readers blooming in this classroom!
To celebrate
Dr. Seuss’ birthday, which was at the beginning of March, we
have been reading lots of his books. We really liked
Horton Hatches the Egg.
We modeled the book and we each created creatures for Horton
to hatch. Some of them are very interesting, such as a
snake-bird and a dragon-bat! And since we are working on
descriptive writing, we are each writing papers describing
our creatures. We know that we have to use lots of
describing words using our senses to make sure the reader
can picture what we are writing about. We’ve also been
studying the writing process. We know that we start by
brainstorming, then we write a rough draft (or sloppy copy),
revise and edit with others and the teacher, and finally we
can write our mistake-free final draft. Keep an eye out in
the hall for our descriptive writing and colorful creatures
soon to come!
Science has
been very interesting too. After we finished up learning
about the states of matter, solid, liquid, and gas, we moved
on to learning about the Sun, Moon, Stars, and Planets. We
were fascinated to find out that the Sun is really a star.
We also liked looking at and trying to figure out what
figure some of the constellations formed.
Happy Spring!
