About Us
St. Edward-on-the-Lake Parish had barely completed the
construction of the church when, in 1958, building began on
a school and convent. Archbishop John Cardinal Dearden
dedicated the buildings in September, 1959 with the first
St. Edward School students enrolling in 1st to 6th
grades.
The first
teaching staff were the Sisters of Mercy. Later the Sisters
of St. Francis staffed the school until 1995. We have one
teaching sister on staff today, Sister Faye, IHM and six lay
teachers.
In 2001, St.
Edward Parish, under the leadership of our pastor, Father
Joe Esper, embarked upon a major capital campaign to build a
gymnasium and cafeteria which would be attached to St.
Edward School.
A large
bequest, several CSA campaigns, Booster Club fundraising,
and careful planning on the part of our Stewardship
Committee and building committee brought the plans on paper
to reality. Groundbreaking for the Hogan Center was June
11, 2006, with construction continuing through the 2006-07
school year. The Hogan Center, our new gymnasium and
cafeteria, held its “grand opening” on August 19, 2007 with
Bishop Boyea, local clergy and Sr. Mary Gehringer,
Superintendent of Catholic Schools in attendance.
Our theme was
and is “we are building God’s Kingdom in Lakeport.” As
Father Joe states, “This is an exciting year for all of us,
and we are looking forward to learning how to make the best
use of our new facility.”
